Haiku Contest? Oh yeah......

So I was sitting, thinking about my past posts, and realized I never declared the winner of the haiku contest.  Remember?  Way back in... July?  What kind of a contest doesn't have a winner?  A dumb one.
Well, after reading the haikus over again and again and examining the photos, I chose the one that spoke to my heart the most.  Congratulations Jacob.  Here it is:

mmm, charles dickens.
That's a good Hawaii read-
Burger anyone?

There were many other excellent haikus with accompanying pictures (thanks Crystal, Candace, Tim and Kelly), but here's what I love about Jacob's:
I love the use of onomatopoeia in the first line and the deliberate choice to leave it all in lower case.  I enjoy the reference to the corresponding blog (not a requirement, but a nice touch) and the affirmation of the choice of novel I took on my travels (I enjoy affirmation), which was, in fact, a good Hawaii read (chilling, gloomy scenes of England's marshlands vs. bright, sunny, tropical Maui).  However, the third line betrays the author's complete lack of interest in the choice of novel whatsoever by switching the subject and acknowledging his hunger which obviously is his main concern.  The author wants nothing more than to move beyond the boring, tedious small talk and get his ass to In 'n Out for a double-double.  I can relate to that.  The corresponding illustration is fabulous and... well... made me want to respond by saying, "Yes.  Yes I do want a burger."
Congrats Jacob.  I'll be sending you an In 'n Out gift card.  I'll probably send you a shirt too.  Let me know which one you would like (not to assume you like any of them- but just pick one anyway.  Affirm me) and your size.  Your next double-double is on me.  I wish it could be with me.  Miss you bro.

Hopefully, I'll come up with some other brilliant game for us all to play.

Oh YEAH! I forgot about this until the other day when I saw the photo that Anna submitted with my admittedly non-haiku work. What a wonderful haiku here. It totally captures an experience I'm having with writing papers right now...and I WOULD prefer an In 'n Out. For sure. Or at least a trip to Trader Joes. My Canadian Permanent Resident card has expired so I must stay here until the new one comes...otherwise they may not let me back in. Problematic for sure. Anyway, thank you for the opportunity to enjoy this great haiku. I may print it out as inspiration for my paper writing.

I question...did you just equate a conversation about Dickens to, shall I quote, "boring, tedious small talk."

I mean I love me some In'N Out, but jeeze.
Stab me in the heart right now.

How about conversation about Dickens over double doubles?

Now that's a tasty burger..

Oh SNAP! I am so gonna dig that burger. I've been sitting at home waiting and checking and waiting and checking and checking and waiting for this glorious day. The honor bestowed on me this day will be enough for me to hold my head high through any dark days ahead. Once, my haiku won... once.
Btw, your shirts kick some serious bootay. I like the lone bird with the crazy eyes if you really had it in you to let me advertize your genius for you.
and the missing is felt deeply, bro.
-also I want you to know that the "captcha" code thing I have to write in order to prove I'm human is "lonful"... makes me sad. Is this some sort of sick game you're playing?
